More Tip's From Big Tony

  1. Turn your thermostat down. Lowering your heating temperature is the most effective way to save energy. Each degree you lower your thermostat can reduce your heating energy consumption by as much as two percent.

Turn heat off in unoccupied rooms. If you can adjust heat on a room-by-room basis, turn it down to 55 degrees in rooms you're not using.

  2. Replace furnace filters regularly. Stop drafts. Make sure your doors and windows are kept closed during the winter. Install or repair weather stripping or caulking to eliminate cold drafts.

  3. Turn lights off when a room is vacant. Use compact fluorescent light bulbs where you need light for long periods.

  4. Turn electronic appliances off. When you're not using stereos, televisions and other electronics, turn them off.

  5. Reduce unnecessary exterior lighting. Turn off unnecessary ornamental lighting. Turn off exterior lighting during the day.

  6. Turn your hot water heater down. Setting the water heating thermostats to 120 degrees reduces standby loss and lowers the risk of scalding.

  7. Reduce hot water use. Showers use less heated water than baths. Try shortening your showers by a few minutes. Install low flow showerheads and faucet aerators if you don't already have them. Run your clothes washer and dishwasher only when full.

SEASONAL HIGHLIGHT-
SAVE MONEY BY INSULATING YOUR PIPES THIS WINTER-

Do your water pipes pass through an unheated area? Do they run under your house or from an unheated utility room? If so, insulate your pipes—at least the hot water pipes. Uninsulated hot water pipes lose heat and cause your water heater to to work harder. While the same is not true of cold water pipes, insulating them can prevent them from sweating and dripping in heated areas, or freezing in unheated areas.

Saving Energy - Insulating Your Pipes

Easy to use, pre-formed foam pipe insulation sleeves are available. These sleeves have a slit down their length and just snap in place on the pipes. Cut them to length to fit as closely as possible at all ends, corners and junctions. With a little imagination, you can cut miters and angles in the material in such a way that the insulation completely covers any junctions. Cover the slits and joints with vinyl duct tape.
